How long does amnesia last?

My best friend recently developed amnesia. She doesn't seem to have any injuries on her body so we're assuming something left her emotionally traumatized. She hasn't gone to the doctor yet but hopefully she will in a few days. It seems like she can't remember the last 4 or so years... How long will it take for her to start remembering? And will she remember all at once or just in pieces?
